NA is a nonprofit fellowship or society of men and women for whom drugs had become a major problem. We are recovering addicts who meet regularly to help each other stay clean. This is a program of complete abstinence from all drugs. There is only one requirement for membership, the desire to stop using.
We suggest that you keep an open mind and give yourself a break. Our program is a set of principles written so simply that we can follow them in our daily lives. The most important thing about them is that they work.
A Narcotics Anonymous meeting a day for at least the first ninety days of recovery is a good idea. Most of us spent way more than an hour a day on our active addiction—the getting and using, and finding the ways and means to get more. This is an hour a day to save your life and build a life worth being clean for, and it has to take priority.
Old friends, places, and ideas are often a threat to our recovery. We need to change our playmates, playgrounds and playthings. It can be scary at first, and hard to tell our old associations that we need to take care of ourselves, but we can’t get and stay clean with the people, places, and things that we used with always around.
Our own best ideas got us to the rooms of NA, and we need a sponsor to help us understand and apply the NA program in our lives. We suggest that you look for a Narcotics Anonymous sponsor as soon as you become acquainted with members in your area.
“…get and use telephone numbers…” of clean addicts who are working an NA program in their lives. Call the recovering addicts who seem to have the life you want for yourself. Force yourself out of your comfort zone, and call especially when you don’t feel like it.
Instead of picking up that first drug, we do the following:
